    Ryu KOIDE

Senior Researcher at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (Sub-theme 1)

Ryu Koide is a Senior Researcher at the Material Cycles Division of the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan. His work explores policy and behavioural strategies to advance circular economies and decarbonised lifestyles, employing a combination of agent-based modelling, life cycle assessment, and consumer surveys. Bridging industrial ecology, complexity science, and behavioural science, he focuses on computational and participatory approaches to decision-making under deep uncertainty. His research aims to identify multiple pathways for (un)achieving sustainability targets related to carbon neutrality and circularity. Prior to entering academia, he worked as a consulting engineer in the Global South and as a policy researcher involved in United Nations programmes on sustainable consumption and production. Koide holds a Ph.D. in Technology Management from the University of Tokyo, an M.S. in Government Analytics from Johns Hopkins University, and a B.Eng. in Resources and Environmental Engineering from Waseda University.
